about

hoots & hellmouth Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

With music and lyrics that are both transportive, yet achingly familiar, Hoots and Hellmouth debut their third full-length album, Salt.

Track Name: Picked by the Root
Babe, you look half asleep
You’re hiding your eyes and I can’t see
Where you’ve gotten now.
Are you up and how high are you?
Hi, how are you?
Does it feel a little better when you sing
All those shades of gray
You gather in a day
Away, away?

Is it common where you come from
To laugh at losers in love
As they all fall from grace
Burying their faces in the dirt
Of dear old mother earth?
Then it’s right back to the root of the curse
You can blame your mother’s heart
But don’t pick it apart
Cuz it picked you
Yes, you
Little ol’ you

Sit down on your hands and wait it out

Maybe I should just take a hint,
Run myself for the president,
Or take a savior’s tone
And lead all my little lambs home back to
My father’s house
On an orchard in the south,
Where there’s a hole in the roof
And all the water’s run out.
Where I would no less be
Happy as a seed in the sod
Just waiting for the nod.

Sit down on your hands and wait it out.
Track Name: Antebellum Tree
Every day just a little after 5 o’clock
There’s an evening beginning on every block
Where the sun don’t look as hot as it did
Earlier in the day.
Well, neither do you and I, but that’s ok,
As long as you stay
Handy with a needle and some thread
Or just happy with that hole in your head
Loving you life with the dead
And dying daily
I’m beginning to think I wasn’t quite ready to say that
And maybe I won’t ever be ready to say that

But oh, you antebellum tree,
You sing to me! Sing to me!
Oh, you antebellum tree,
What’s it like to be
Watching me
From your side

Of that fence I try to wrap my head around?
I try to throw a stone and make some sound,
Set my feet on sacred ground,
Barefoot and barely landing.
“Son,” I can hear you cry,
“Don’t you know where you are standing?”
But I can only answer that I do not know.
The only word I heard from you was “Go!”

But oh, you antebellum tree,
You sing to me! Sing to me!
Oh, you antebellum tree,
What’s it like to be
Watching me
From your side

Where your branches swing
Over everything.

So give me a few pine needles for some thread
To sew up this hole in my head,
Breathe some life into my dead
And watch the evening begin again.
When the sky is divided I’ll slip on in
And maybe find out where my balance has been.
Track Name: Threadbare
It’s wearing my soul out
Over the knees
Wearing my soul out
All full of holes
Wearing my soul out
Till I’m Threadbare
Threadbare

Grass stain green
Seems to me
All my fibers sing

It’s wearing my soul out
Over the knees
Wearing my soul out
All full of holes
Wearing my soul out
Till I’m Threadbare
Threadbare

Frictious on me
Sticks right to
How I do (what I do)
Frictious, frictious
Frayed and unraveling
Unravelling

Blood stain red
Black lung lead
All my fibers threadbare

It’s wearing my soul out
Over the knees
Wearing my soul out
All full of holes
Wearing my soul out
Till I’m Threadbare
Threadbare
Track Name: Returning in Pieces
Returning in Pieces

Rain, needle rain
Threading liquid veins
Churning syrup earth
Until it breathes again
Stirring up still birth
Until it bleeds again
And the stains are upon us again

Now that the mystery is less mysterious
The curious uncovered the seed
We’re taking our lives less serious
Knowing that knowing is all we’ll ever need

My thesis is this:
Reinvention of a wheel,
Chopped to square,
Drawing arcs in the air
From A to B to C to D
And then back to A.
Suddenly I’m a genius.
Please stop me if you’ve already seen this.

Now that the mystery is less mysterious
The curious uncovered the seed
We’re taking our lives less serious
Knowing that knowing is all we’ll ever need

So why do I
Refuse to leave this?
Do I know I
Am coming back in pieces?
I’m eternally returning in pieces of you.

I feel you coming back to me
I feel like I am coming home

Now that the mystery is less mysterious
The curious have uncovered the seed
We’re taking our lives less serious
Knowing that knowing is all we’ll ever need

So why do I
Refuse to leave this?
Do I know I
Am coming back in pieces?
I’m eternally returning in pieces of you.
